Psoriasis is a common skin condition that causes skin redness and irritation. Patients who suffer from psoriasis experience thick, red plaques with flakey, silver-white patches of skin. These symptoms can be acute or can come on slowly. Though psoriasis can clear up, sufferers may experience a recurrence.
Symptoms Can Include
- Irritated, red, flaky patches of skin
- Most often seen on the elbows, knees, and center line of the body
- Red patches may appear anywhere on the body, including the scalp
Skin May Be:
- Itchy
- Dry and covered with silver, flaky skin (scales)
- Pink-red in color (like the color of salmon)
- Raised and thick
Treatments
The goal of treatment is to control your symptoms and prevent infection. Associated Dermatologists treats psoriasis several different ways depending upon the severity, extent, and location. Treatment could include the use of topical creams or injections or could include the use of UVA phototherapy, Narrowband UVB phototherapy or Xtrac laser. We are the only local Dermatologist office to offer the following Psoriasis treatments:
UVA Phototherapy
UVA (ultraviolet light A) phototherapy is a treatment plan for adults who suffer from moderate to severe psoriasis. By exposing the affected skin to ultraviolet light, Associated Dermatologists may be able to treat the symptoms of psoriasis. UVA treatment requires additional medication to be taken in conjunction with the treatment.
Narrow-Band UVB Phototherapy
UVB (ultraviolet light B) phototherapy in many ways is becoming more widely used than UVA. This procedure is easier for people to undergo because no other medication is required and it may be safer over the long term. Associated Dermatologists offers state-of-the-art Narrowband UVB equipment.
XTRAC®
XTRAC® is a great leap forward in the treatment of psoriasis, vitiligo, atopic dermatitis, and leukoderma treating only the lesions and not the surrounding healthy skin. This innovative therapy works on mild, moderate, or severe cases. There is no anesthesia needed, and the XTRAC® treatment is pain-free.
While psoriasis is a chronic disease with no known cure, it can be put into longed remission with treatments that manage its symptoms and clear its visible signs. XTRAC light treatment, the only FDA-cleared excimer laser, is clinically proven to slow and reverse the growth of psoriatic cells.
